Chairman's Report

Thanks to Brent for continuing work as secretary, despite his ill health and that of his wife and his parents. I'm sure we all extend our sympathy to him at this difficult time. Thanks also to the rest of the committee [Martin Brookman, Richard Chambers, Nigel Coote, Bob Culver, Will Curry, Chris Dawkins and Don McKeand] who keep this show on the road. At the last committee meeting it was agreed that we would be happy to take on a new committee member, should anyone be willing to put themself forward.

Normally at this AGM I report that next year's programme is complete and looking pretty exciting. This year we're a little behind and I have to admit we've been struggling a bit with the evening meetings. We tend to stick to our tried and tested formula of the fixed events like the quiz night, fish & chips and car park concours. This leaves us with five meetings to arrange some other form of entertainment, typically invited speakers and this is where we've been struggling. It's tricky to come up with five new ideas each year and we would very much welcome suggestions or, even better, volunteers. At the moment we still have January and ebruary to finalise.

On the other hand, the programme of runs is looking really good. This year we will have an extra weekend run so there will be one each month from April until September. The extra one this year will be part of the Baton Relay when we hand it on to the Northampton Section. Hopefully, we'll also be able to have another run when East Herts hand it over to use at some suitable intermediate location but that's yet to be arranged. There will also be monthly midweek runs each month throughout the year, except January because that falls on January 1st when there are other bike events to go to. Many thanks to the run organisers: Norm, Will, Nige, Don and for the first time this year Nick Kotarski.

The format of runs has been the subject of much discussion within the committee of late. Traditionally, we have stuck to the Tulip-style route sheets but it is apparent that many riders simply prefer to put their trust in the rider in front and simply follow them, maybe because they don't have a route holder, poor eyesight or simple preference. Opinions within the committee varied, so it was agreed to leave it up to the run organiser whether they want to produce a route sheet or to use the despatch rider or second-man drop-off system.

At last year's AGM all was deemed to be okay within the section and members seemed happy to let the committee continue for another year of merriment.

December's Xmas bash and auction went well. Great work from all the gang working on selling off the items. Terrific effort also Martin and his elves in the kitchen, thank you to the whole Coote family, great job pals.

Will's Quiz Night was just as hard as usual. Will once again producing the questions to make everyone's grey matter ache.

As usual the Breakfast Meets and Mid-Week lunches, organised by Richard, have all been a great success. A variety of talks were all extremely well received by members.

Great turnout for the fish and chips night. Nice food.

The Newsletter from Bryan continues to produce some lovely stuff. Well done to both Bryan and his contributors, particularly the hard-core team of scribblers.

Runs this year included the Spring Run by Bryan, a lovely thrum out through the villages. The Roger & Arthur King Memorial Run, with a great route by Will and the usual super standards set by the King family in the catering department. Even though I broke down, yet again, I did manage to get home grab another bike and still appear in time for lunch! The Albert Brown Run lived up to it's title of ‘The Sunshine Run' as did the Summer Saunter, another well organised run, courtesy of Norm. The Autumn Gold Run from Nige was, as usual, a lovely run and lunch.

The huge array of Mid-Week Runs continue at top speed, terrific work by Don, his usual standards of route and lunch venue continue to sparkle. Winter Wanderings by Bryan have also charged on through the colder months. His great routes and food stops continue apace.

As usual we have to sincerely thank Chris and Heather for their continued fortitude in coping with the committee dropping in and disrupting their evenings at regular intervals. Tea and cakes are just super and very much up to Heather's usual high standards.

Yet again, another great year by Nigel and Sam, their hard work on our projector, computer, archive and ongoing IT work, are reflected in the terrific slide shows and accompaniment of speakers.

Nigel, as new Treasurer has confirmed that the club is on a sound footing with around a grand in the vault.Huge thanks for Nigel for taking on this role on top of all of his other club work.

I'd like to thank the committee: Bryan, Martin, Chris, Nigel, Will, Don, Bob and Richard, for yet another industrious year, well done.

Some of our other helpers including Sam, Richard and Brian for helping head raffle honcho and purveyor of prizes, Chris, many thanks. Money raised here pays for the hire of the hall and anything we need throughout the year.

Now the Hoppy Cup, this year it's awarded to Neil Cairns Well done!
